International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must meet basic criteria by certain organisations to be eligible for employment in Australia. 

As a starting point, you should read the information provided by the Australian Government on their ‘DoctorConnect’ website.  This website provides useful and valuable information about the requirements to practice as a doctor in Australia (whether it be public or private), as well as detailed information about ‘Australia’s Health System’

In addition, the ‘Doctor Connect’ website has an on-line ‘Checklist’ which has been designed to assist overseas trained doctors who wish to work in Australia.

Who is Ramsay Health Care?
Ramsay Health Care is Australia’s largest and most respected operator of private hospitals. 

What are we looking for?
Specialists:
We are looking for Specialists interested in pursuing opportunities to establish their private practice with us (ie non-salaried position/self-employed and treating private patients).

To do this and to meet the current Australian legislative requirements to practice privately, medical practitioners must have:

• Fellowship from an Australian specialty college or recognised equivalent;
• Eligibility to be registered as a Specialist with the relevant Australian Medical Board;
• Access to a provider number that attracts Medicare benefits; and
• Appropriate indemnity insurance.

If you have a specialty qualification from overseas, you need to apply to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and relevant Australian specialty college for assessment of your overseas qualifications.  (Please refer to ‘Useful Links’ for web address for Australian specialty colleges)

The Australian specialty college will make a recommendation on how your overseas specialty training and qualifications fit within the Australian standards and advise if you need to undertake further training to be awarded an Australian fellowship. 

Please note:  Ramsay Health Care are unable to guarantee that we can always meet the supervision requirements as recommended by the Australian specialty college.  This will need to be assessed on a case by case basis and is dependant on the location of the hospital and the number of Specialists practicing at that hospital with an Australian Fellowship.

Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) & Career Medical Officers (CMOs)
Ramsay Health Care also has a limited number of salaried positions for RMOs & CMOs in a number of locations throughout Australia.

There is a great deal of interest from local applications in these positions; therefore we are looking for doctors who already hold general / unconditional registration with an Australian Medical Board.
