Information on Australia
About Australia
Australia was discovered in the year 1770, when Captain James Cook landed at Botany Bay, in Sydney, NSW. Australia found its place on the world map. Prior to this discovery, the "aboriginals" who are supposed to belong to one of the oldest civilizations, inhabited this vast area of landmass comprising of rocky and steep mountains, sprawling valleys, lush green plains and one of the most extensive coastlines in the world, as the country is surrounded by seas.
Today Australia is a federation of six states and two territories, each having a parliament of its own. It became united on 1 January 1901.
The unique position of Australia in the southern hemisphere and its close proximity to the sea, has rendered distinct climatic conditions to the country. Throughout the year it enjoys a mild temperate climate making it attractive to tourists.
Australia boasts rich and varied vegetation. It possesses some of the rarest varieties of flower and has rich reserves of huge mineral deposits, contributing significantly to the prosperity of the country. The country is the highest producer of Opals and Black Opals. The Australian wildlife is thriving with numerous rare animals and birds, such as the Kookaburra, Kangaroo, Koala and Emu. The Kangaroo is the most abundant animal and is also the national animal of the country.
Originally dominated by the English speaking people, Australia has become a land with a multi-cultural population, having invited a large number of immigrants to the country. Although English is the official language, the Australians speak in a version of their own, difficult for tourists to understand at first. The currency of Australia is the Australian Dollar.
Australians are sports-loving persons and as a nation, Australia is famous for games like Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball and Swimming. The country attracts visitors to its natural wonders like Great Barrier Reef and Fraser Island among many others. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House are also significant landmarks of Australia that draws a large number of tourists to Sydney.
Climate of Australia
The climate of Australia varies from place to place. While it is arid or semi-arid in the interior of Australia, or the "Outback", as it is known, it is temperate towards the south and experiences humid, sub-tropical weather in northern parts of the country. Some areas of Australia experience extreme weather conditions, such as tropical cyclones and in other places, long periods of severe drought.
Flora and Fauna of Australia
The main natural vegetation of Australia is essentially evergreen, ranging from the dense bushland and eucalyptus forests of the coast, to the mulga and mallee scrub and saltbush of the inland plains. As far as fauna is concerned, Australia has some of the rare species that are not found anywhere else in the world. Estimations show that 84 percent of mammals, 89 percent of reptiles, 93 percent of frogs, and 45 percent of birds are species that are found in Australia alone. Some of the famous animals of Australia are Kangaroos, Koalas, Platypus, Dingos, Tasmanian Devils, Wombats and Frilled-Neck Lizards. Although you have probably heard lots of scary stories about our sharks, spiders, snakes and poisonous jelly fish ... we don't come across them that often so don't be frightened to join us !
